A little funniness occurred yesterday.

A package was at my door when I arrived home.  This wasn't too unusual - I'd been ordering some stuff from ebay - but  it did have a liquidy feel to it.  I thought it might be some lampe berger oil I'd ordered, but it seemed too soon for it to have already arrived.

So I carefully opened the box, and what's the first thing I see?  A letter  of 'belief' from a 'Christian soldier'.  Now this brought to mind the whole Christian soldier thing that happened on lj, and the resulting impact on fandom.  It also reminded me that in a fundamental Christian perspective... I'm probably not a good little Catholic... being that I'm basically Agnostic and all.  Also with a little of wiccan/witch and other thrown in.

So I'm feeling a little apprehensive - what if a Christian crusader had targeted me??  - but I open the rest of the package... and yes, it was the lampe berger oil!

It was all just a little paranoia from the current paranoid culture of war and fear :(

But kinda amusing/ironic in retrospect.

White Christmas? Dream on

Torontonians probably won't be walking in a winter wonderland come Dec. 25
Dec 13, 2007 04:30 AM

Staff reporter
'Sno joke: We're going to have a white Christmas. If we all pack up and move to Yellowknife, that is.
In Toronto, the odds we'll get a perfect day – with snow in the air and on the ground, as Environment Canada says – aren't much better than a snowball's chance in hell.

If we're prepared to settle for merely a white one, with at least 10 cm underfoot, chances are less than 50 per cent, says senior climatologist David Phillips.

More chilling news to blame on climate change.

"Winters aren't what they used to be. They've warmed up. Now we're more likely to get the liquid stuff than the solid stuff," Phillips says, adding not only is there less chance of walking in a winter wonderland on Dec. 25, but the depth to which you'll sink is half what it used to be.

Mother Nature's fickle ways dampened holiday spirits in memorable fashion back in 1979. A five-day downpour left Santa and his "raindeer" sloshing through nearly 100 mm of water on city streets. There was so much flooding, the jolly old elf had to trade in his black boots for hip waders.

It was the opposite scene in 1872 when Torontonians' dream of a white Christmas turned into a nightmare of bone-chilling proportions. Icy, gale-force winds blasted 58 cm of snow into massive drifts in what became the city's greatest two-day snowfall on record.

If that doesn't make you green with envy, cast your eyes north or east. For the past 30 years, Yellowknife, Thunder Bay, Iqaluit and Quebec City have been blessed with piles of snow for the holidays.

It's all about location, according to meteorologist Geoff Coulson. North of Highway 7, predictions of a white Christmas are much rosier, thanks to colder temperatures and the lake effect. But in downtown Toronto, it's a toss-up between rain and snow, Coulson explains.

Since the first storm of the season last month, you'd think the odds of wintry weather when we want it would be better. But you'd be wrong.

"It's definitely looking better than last year" when Dec. 25 was dry, green and 2C, Coulson offers. But temperatures for the next 12 days are expected to hover around zero, a little milder than normal. And that could make all the difference between white and wet.

For Phillips, it's about nostalgia. "A nice fresh snow cover is as much a part of Christmas as tinsel and toys," he says. Even those who hate snow the rest of the year warm up to the sight "on that magical day."
So if snow falls, "embrace it," Phillips advises. It's melting fast.

Canada really does like snow! For Christmas, at least. "If that doesn't make you green with envy, cast your eyes north or east. For the past 30 years, Yellowknife, Thunder Bay, Iqaluit and Quebec City have been blessed with piles of snow for the holidays."

I couldn't help but think that some countries might not want snow. Is this possible? I don't know. Alas, my city may also be deprived of snow :(

When I was in grade school, about 9 years ago, we had lots of snow in the winter! Well, ok, not lots compared to even 5 years before that... but we still had snow. What do the children do now???

We played in the snow, made awesome forts, snowmen (dasterly punks would sometimes go and destroy those afore mentioned snowmen and buildings... so people would roam the field at lunch and recess to protect the younger kids work - junior mounties! ahh, Fraser). This was all winter long! Not just for 2 or 3 months, with spotty periods because the rain melts it all.

We would have Winter Games! Joyeux Noël, Bonhomme Carnaval (Quebec winter carnaval) and all that. The older kids helping and organising it for the younger kids. Freezing cold out, lots of fun and SNOWY activitys. And then hot chocolate to warm us up afterwards. Ahhh... it was so good and hot because it was so so cold out!

I know, some cold and snow will come after winter - perhaps January or February, and last through March... but no white Christmas??? That's like Canada without hockey :(

Anyway, funny # 2: WatchingTV? Watch your back
WatchingTV? Watch your backTheStar.com - entertainment - Watching TV? Watch your back

Increasingly, danger lurks in the comfort of our living rooms (except in Canada)
December 03, 2007
Vinay Menon
There were always many good reasons to watch television alone. Now there's a great one: you won't get stabbed.
On Thursday, a 66-year-old Seattle woman was knifed in the abdomen as she watched TV with a neighbour. According to a story in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the two "started arguing after the victim changed the channel to a religious program."

Weird. Weirder still: the dispute happened around 8:15 a.m., a time when television is overrun with cartoons, infomercials and staid morning shows. Who knew TV could trigger such antisocial aggression in the non-prime-time hours?

Maybe programs such as The Early Show should start running disclaimers: "Warning. Some viewers may find the following so spellbinding that changing the channel could result in a murderous fury."
As Seattle police spokesperson Renee Witt told the paper: "I don't know what they were originally watching. But it must have been something really good."

The attack occurred three days after an eerily similar incident in Phoenix, Ariz. Last Monday, a 13-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was stabbed (also in the abdomen) in a dispute (also over what to watch on television).

The attacker? His 12-year-old brother.

In September, meanwhile, The Times of India published a story about the stabbing death of a 24-year-old man in New Delhi. The victim was killed because the accused wanted to watch television at a party instead of listen to impromptu guitar playing.

"Now I am regretting the heinous crime I committed over a petty issue like watching TV," the accused told the paper.

Then there was last year's bizarre case in which a woman in Fremont, Ohio, fatally stabbed her 69-year-old father. She also attacked two children who, fortunately, managed to escape and call 911.
The motive? The woman wanted to watch football. But her father and a friend's 8-year-old girl were already watching the movie Seventeen Again.

I have stumbled upon many other cases of what might be termed "TVrage." From the emergency call Houston police received after a young couple literally came to blows over the remote control, to a Malaysian case in which an elder brother doused a sibling with kerosene and set him ablaze after the two argued about what to watch.

Across the planet, there have been beatings, stabbings and shootings stemming from TVrage. Except, that is, in Canada*.

(*Questionable statement based on limited research conducted yesterday morning after a long night of unrelated research into the effects of vodka.)

Why don't Canadians inflict physical harm on one another over a petty issue like watching TV? Do we have more perspective? Are we simply a kinder, gentler nation? Or could this national shortage of TVrage somehow be related to Canadian TV itself?

Think about it. Corner Gas (CTV, 8:30 tonight) has a loyal following. But even the most devoted Dog River groupie would not resort to homicide if he or she was suddenly deprived of Brent Butt.

Dragons' Den (CBC, 8 tonight) is airing its season finale. It's a great show, no question. But you know what? No Canadian would brandish an assault weapon if a friend or family member casually changed the channel to, say, Chuck (NBC, Citytv, 8 tonight).

As I sit here with throbbing temples – damn you, Grey Goose! – I'm starting to really appreciate Canadian television. I mean, just knowing that I can walk into any bar in this city to watch The National with Peter Mansbridge and leave without bleeding to death is profoundly comforting.

The industry should really use this in its marketing campaigns: "Watch Canadian TV and nobody gets hurt."

TV Rage! ok, now i've heard everything... Oh Canada, lack of your tv programs do not incite murderous rampages. Good for you!

The one thing that didn't compute for me, was that we watch A LOT of U.S. programs... Most of the channels I get are American... sooooooo... what does it mean that Canadians and Americans are watching the same stuff, but Canadians are NOT killing each other over it??

Interesting. And that's it for today!

Even more snow tonight!  Another 15cm (+the present 30cm).  Buffalo got up to 60cm in some areas.  Oi.  brings to mind the storm a few years back now, the winter of '00, I think it was.  Buffalo got 8 feet in only a few days.  It was craziness.

Down in Buffalo, pre-winter blast leaves 155,000 without power
Oct. 13, 2006. 08:41 AM
CANADIAN PRESS

The Fort Erie and Welland areas of southwestern Ontario are digging out from as much as 30 centimetres of snow following a powerful pre-winter storm.

The region may receive up to 15 more centimetres before a let-up to what Environment Canada terms "significant snowfalls of historic proportions."

The snow and strong winds of up to 90 kilometres an hour have caused snow-laden branches to snap onto power lines, causing power outages from Port Colborne to Fort Erie, and forcing part of the Queen Elizabeth Way to be shut down

The storm that dumped snow on the Fort Erie-Welland areas also walloped Buffalo and western New York state, leaving more than 40 centimetres of snow.

More than 155,000 customers are without electricity and utility officials say it could be well into next week before all power is restored.

Snowsqualls coming off Lake Huron also left parts of Ontario’s Bruce Peninsula, Parry Sound and other cottage country areas covered in snow. Another 10 centimetres of snow might fall this morning before it changes to showers.

Northern Ontario also received an early introduction to winter, with an additional five centimetres expected today in some areas, including Kenora, Fort Frances, Dryden and Red Lake.

In Huntsville, Ontario Provincial Police have closed down southbound Highway 11, south of Stephenson Rd. 4 after a vehicle went into the ditch, killing one person inside at about 5 a.m., Const. Julia McCuaig said.

"The road conditions up there were very poor at the time. It was sever weather conditions ... Roads were icy," she said. "Apparently in Bracebridge, it’s clear. It’s just when you go just north of that, you hit the severe weather conditions."

The man, whose identity is being without until police can notify his next of kin, was alone in the vehicle at the time. No one else was injured.

More of those same conditions and "zero visibility” has closed down Fort Erie-bound Queen Elizabeth Way at Netherby Rd. in Niagara Falls where the weather has knocked out power in part of the region, McCuaig said.

"We have to be sure to be careful out there today - that’s the main thought."

Yesterday, winter weather may have claimed its first victim of the season in the province when a 27-year-old woman was killed in a head-on collision south of London.

Langton resident Jaclyn Szalkai was driving south on Concession Rd. 2 in Norfolk County, near the north shores of Lake Erie, when the collision occurred just after 2 p.m.

Szalkai lost control of her van, crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a Dodge pick-up truck driven by a 22-year-old Langton man, OPP said.

"A snow (or) slush covered road is being considered a contributing factor in this collision," OPP said.

Szalkai was pronounced dead at nearby Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle sustained non life-threatening injuries and has been released from hospital, police said.

Biting Beaver's situation - abortion questions

$

The Alice Cooper concert was awesome. Maybe more on that, later.

I just read about Biting Beaver's situation - something every woman should read.  Basically, she couldn't get Emergency Contraception (EC)  - from the few doctors who  prescribe it in the first place - because she's not married, and wasn't raped.  She tried all of the surrounding counties.... and ended up getting pregnant.

Now I'm wondering.... since, and I quote, "Canada is one of only a few countries in the world with no laws limiting abortion. While some non-legal obstacles exist, abortion access in Canada is among the freest in the world.", could she - as a US citizen -  get an abortion in Canada?

I'm thinking that legally, it would be yes.  Canadians and Americans can go across the border without much trouble (if any) for things like eye surgeries, so why should this be any different?

But I'm thinking that since abortions are paid for by Medicare/the government, she (as an American) might have to pay for it.  On the Morgentaler (love him :)) website it mentions $500 for less than 11 weeks

So from a financial perspective, it isn't much different from the US.  But, from her blog, she seems concerned about crossing a line of protestors.   I don't think there are many (any?) protestors in most Canadian (ontario?) clinics...  I would be surprised if there are.   Plus, wouldn't the cops step in?  Of course, looking at Caledonia, perhaps not.

Going slightly off topic, this 'line of protestors' thing has always slightly puzzled me.  How can people - enough to qualify as a 'line of protestors'!! - afford to hang around outside all of the places that perform abortions, all the time??   Unlike the Caledonian indians, they aren't being paid by the goverment for nothing.... I would assume.   Are there really that few places that do abortions??   Also, to comment on the motives of the protestors, it's rather...  mean and rude to be judging and condemning people for personal choices....  It's their own business.  Live and let live and all that.  Strange that there's such a prolonged effort against something of that nature.

And finally, all this thought about accidental pregnancies and abortion has got me concerned... How to get 'the pill'?  I *loathe* going to the doctors with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.  Isn't there some way to just.... get it online?  Without any exam??  Oh!  what about this 'depo' shot (gah!  hate needles!!!)  Do you need to have the whole exam thing for it?  What about a patch?  I think I heard about a patch.... That would be ideal.   Is it like a nicotine patch?  Do you need  to go to the doc?

U.S. patrols Canadian border - the end of the longest undefended border in the world

*Sigh*

When I saw the news report about theU.S. beginning air patrols south of Canadian Prairie border, I can't tell you how much that saddened me.

It's probably very difficult for people who don't live in Canada, or even people who don't live close to the border, to understand the closeness of the Canada-US relationship.  Ever since 1812, we've been probably two of the closest nations  on earth -  partly because we do have similiar values...   It's been said for a long time that we have the longest undefended border in the world... well, no longer.  :(

Even 5 years ago, it was so different.  If you were bored, had nothing to do, you might cruise over the bridge (into the US)... just because.  It was a nice thing to do on the weekend.  Go shopping.   Look at things.  My dentist was in the states.  Whenever we went out for ice cream, it was usually over the bridge.

In some places, where the bridge was short enough, people would just walk over, buy some shoes, toss the old ones, and come back (to Canada). Lots of kids even play sports in the states, travelling back and forth from games in the US, to games in Canada....  The US was never another country... it was just.. over the bridge.  It was easier to get to than any other city, even.

We would always buy stuff like cake icing over the bridge, because they have a way better selection.  And now, it's like... we have to have passports... or something similiar???  It's just... wrong... We're closer to the states than we are to other provinces... or we were... Some European countries must be the same - Britain and France... and Spain...

There was even
"debate in Washington on whether to erect a 3,000 mile wall, (perhaps a Berlin style one with watchtowers and minefields?) between the US and Canada. This time the wall's intentions would be to keep people out rather than to keep them in."  Granted, it was dropped, thanks to U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, but the fact that it was actually part of a (draft) bill shows how far we've come.

It's all understandable, I suppose.  We learned about this in uni, in poli sci classes - how politicians create fear to manipulate the populace.  And it's working so well :(  Just like the Russia-bear-commercial era.   And as for the 'security' aspect, the justification that they're patrolling the border to stop terrorists.. well, that's just... illogical for so many different reasons.   Just another way to create fear - make  americans fear canada... and that's just sad.

And Canada isn't Mexico, or some other country, with people trying to sneak into the US.  Why would canadians want to???  Often, the Mexicans, etc, who want to get into the US are poor and want a better life... Well, Canada is much more of a welfare state than the US is, so it would be much easier for poor people to get help in Canada.   </div>
Anyway, every time something like this happens, I think of due south, and Frasier.  :(    And the longer Bush is in office, the more I like Clinton.  All he did was get a bj.  And some other stuff...

New base will expand U.S. air patrols along Canadian border

Vermont wonders if it will get a Border Wall?

New base will expand U.S. air patrols along Canadian border

</div>In other news, I'm working on those BDS fics!!!  but when I went to some BDS comms for inspiration, I found that... the fandom's almost.... dead!!!   very sad about this turn of events :(

House! Season 3 ep... ?

omg!  House!

Yay!  for the new ep!!  I was thinking it would be a filler until the next episode, but it was actually really good.  I'm glad Wilson isn't dating... but, I hate that cop... he really is a good actor!

Was it just me, or did cop guy seem a *little* too eager to drop his pants?  And the cop guy felt House up a *little* too well, imho - which, admittedly is distorted by slash goggles ;)

I liked Chase again this ep... but, surprisingly, I liked Foreman too.  The last while, he hasn't been too endearing.   And Cameron seemed... in the background this ep.  I don't know whether that's because I'm getting better at ignoring her, or because... she really wasn't in it that much...

And, wow, was it incest night, or what??  The patients on House, and Denny and his 'little person' girlfriend?  wow, weird coincidence.

In conclusion... I liked this ep :)  </div>

I hope next year they have an actual halloweeny episode.

House - Son of Coma Guy 3x something

$

OMFG, I love House so much!!!!!!!

This was one of my all time fav House eps... so much greatness, I'm incoherent :DDDD

In no order:

1) Son of Coma Guy - come on!! love that title... love the concept... love the medical mystery part of it... sometimes the medical part bores me, and I'm more into the character develepment, but this time, the mystery was interesting and well done.

2) Heh!  I love it when House induces things in patients - like strokes, heart attacks, this time seizures.. it's just so much fun!  And when he diagnoses people after just having seen them for a brief amount of time :) is greatness.

3)  I love all the back story we've gotten on House - why he became a doctor, how he and Stacy met,  what he'd want his father to say to him... etc.

It was a good ep because House is a hard character to learn about... he's not exactly open with his feelings and personal stuff.... but they used 'Coma guy' (aka veggie guy), as a means to tell people more about House... at the same time Wilson learned that stuff about House, and Wilson and House were able to talk, almost using coma-guy as an intermediate.

4)  I loved the relationship between House and Wilson.  just... so so many things.. great lines.. greatness.

5) The ducklings were good - Chase didn't betray House again, yay!!!! - and  even Foreman, who I was afraid might slightly badmouth House, was awesome with the cop....  he stood right up to him!

And all the ducklings came and told House about talking to the cop! yay!

6)  I love that the writers/people sort of pushed the envelope by having the father kill himself for the son... and having House help.... and Wilson provide an alibi....

7)  And having Tritter say 'everyone lies'... oooohhhh - House's worst enemies are always... himself - Moriarty!!

8)  Road trip!!

9)  I could do a whole post about the great House/Wilson scenes... I thought the 'Housian Sperm' from that ep when House stole Wilson's tomate and bit into it, spraying Wilson was 'whoa'.  But Wilson's alibi:  Wilson was obviously implying (stating!) that he and House were staying in the same room.... and the woman he approached was part of a couple - asking if they 'swing'?!?!  Implying he and House would like to swing with them?!?!  Implying that he and House were a couple?!?!?!   awesomeness!!!  I did a double take!

anyway, i give this ep a 10/10.

Next ep looks even more extreme!  I've never seen Wilson so angry - or yell like that!  It wasn't the somewhat humorous yelling of this ep... it was... :(((

Anyway... I'm  glad House is still good... SV kinda.... lost me season 4.  Season 3 - the asylum!!!  SV could still have been saved... but by the time season 4 hit... :((

So... now my plan is to check out some of the following (which I sometimes do after House):

bethbethbeth usually posts a good recap of the House eps (and Heroes, too!).  Here's this weeks!

Also the house_wilson comm has their comments on the ep.  They have a couple posts just devoted to discussing the ep.

And sometimes, a while later, I check out television without pity.... but that' usually when it's a repeat or I'm bored.

I also look at my flist for post ep responses...

QUERY:

I just want to make sure I understood this correctly... House got coma-guy  aspirin so his heart  wouldn't be as damaged... he probably helped set up coma-guy so he could strangle/hang himself....  and then after he was dead, House and Wilson called 911/the hospital so that they could rush the body from Atlanta to Jersey???  Wouldn't the heart have.... gone bad by that time???
Appreciate any clarification... or anyone else's thoughts :)</div>

Does anyone know of any good DVD burner softwares?  I'm trying to burn some .avi files on to a dvd -r  so that I can play it on my dvd player...   I'm not sure if I have to convert the.avi files into a different format (or which program to use for that).

I found one program that works (more or less) called AVS video converter.  It works ok-ish, but it puts a really annoying watermark on it, and the dvd freezes almost every minute.... so. upon reflection, this isn't good....

Hi everyone,

As I mentioned a while ago, I'm uploading 'Dexter'....  I've tried yousendit, but it seems a little slow (could very well be my connection).  I've tried xdrive.com instead.  I uploaded Dexter 1x01, and if this works, I'll upload more.

Click on http://plus.xdrive.com/u/1358876495/163085610U18Yrj588TTOWzvShX2

You should be able to download the episode.. If not, I'll go back to yousendit... unless there's something else that people use?

Starring Michael C. Hall, Julie Benz, Jennifer Carpenter, Erik King, Lauren Velez, David Zayas, and James Remar

Six Feet Under's Michael C. Hall is still dealing with death, just in a different way. In this adaptation of Jeff Lindsay's novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," Hall stars as a forensics pathologist who moonlights as a serial killer. (He's not all evil, though; he only murders bad guys.)

Orphaned at the age of three and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter (Michael C. Hall) was adopted by a Miami police officer who recognized his homicidal tendencies and taught him to channel his gruesome passion for human disection in a "constructive" way—by killing only heinous criminals (such as child molesters, mobassassins, and serial killers of the innocent) who have slipped through the justice system. To satisfy his interest in blood and to facilitate his own crimes, Dexter works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami police. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he is easily able to emulate normal emotions and keep up his appearance as a socially-responsible human being. He is well-liked by most of his colleagues, his girlfriend, and her children.

Kenny vs. Spenny

I watched the 2nd season of Kenny vs. Spenny this weekend...  It was pretty good.  I started off liking the good guy (Spenny) best, but by the end, I liked Kenny best.  Not because I think he's cool - he is an asshole on the show - but, I think he's actually.... sort of a good-ish guy at heart.  And  Spenny can be  a jerk. too.   This is why:

In one of the episodes, they were supposed to fight, but Kenny (bad guy) thought that best friends shouldn't fight.  So  he constructed a 'safe room' to lock Spenny in, until the fight was over.  He left the city (because he didn't trust himself not to let Spenny out?).  Kenny ended up coming back to T-dot (toronto, canada) and letting Spenny out.  Kenny (bad guy) then forfeited the fight because he didn't want to fight Spenny (And he thought that he deserved to lose as punishment for locking Spenny into the 'safe room').  Meanwhile, Spenny's kinda violent and couldn't wait to beat Kenny up.

In another episode, Kenny (bad guy) forfeited so that Spenny wouldn't jump off a cliff and hurt himself.

Plus, Kenny's smarter than Kenny.  Ah!  His schemes!  So funny!</div>
I might download more episodes, and upload them for you...  but I'm working on Dexter first!

Kenny vs. Spenny (evil vs. good) is a Canadian comedy reality TV series about two best friends, Kenneth "Kenny" Hotz and Spencer "Spenny" Rice, who face each other constantly to achieve glory in defeating one another at different competitions arranged by both at the beginning, commonly one per episode. The loser of the episode must perform an act of humiliation, usually selected by the winner, which can be seen at the end of each episode.

The main entertainment elements of the series are the comical and irregular competitions, and the contrast in personality between Kenny and Spenny. This contrast usually impacts the way each approaches the competitions. Kenny's approach is typically more unorthodox, and often includes a willingness to use whatever means necessary — including cheating — to win. Although he doesn't always break the rules he and Spenny agree to at the beginning, he is always willing to bend the rules, and usually ends up performing the tasks assigned in a unique way. Kenny sometimes admits to the belief that he cannot win certain competition if they go through and attempts to cause Spenny to forfeit.
